The human resources management (HRM)/payroll cycle is a recurring set of business activities and related data processing operations associated with effectively managing the employee workforce. MS Excel’s spreadsheet format can be a helpful tool when using the application to prepare payroll for your employees.

Participants will be guided with in-class computer simulation activities to develop automated computerised spreadsheet template to set up the salary system.

The specific objectives of this unique fun-filled learning experience are;

  • To describe the major business activities and related data processing operations performed in the human resources management (HRM)/payroll cycle;


  • To identify the major threats in the HRM/payroll cycle, and evaluate the adequacy of various internal control procedures for dealing with them;


  • To explain the key decisions that need to be made in the HRM/payroll cycle, and identify the information required to make those decisions;


  • To equip the HR professional from beginner to the seasoned worker the basics of Microsoft Excel; and


  • To the participants are expected to use the basic Excel functions in relation to the relevant HR functions such as payroll, compensation and employee records management.

The seminar will basically cover the basic functions of Microsoft Excel ( version 2010 and 2013). It will also relate the functions of HR such as payroll, compensation and employee information. 

All Participants are required to bring their own laptops with MS Excel version 2010 or 2013 installed as it will be used throughout the learning session. Please make sure all laptops are fully charged.

Part 1: Human Resource Management and Payroll Cycle

Session 1:  Payroll Activities

  • Calculate employer-paid benefits and taxes
  • Disburse payroll taxes and other deductions
